Steamy Art House Hits



Mostly Dark And Challenging, This International Compilation Is For More Adventurous Film Lovers
The four disc compilation "Steamy Art House Hits" does indeed live up to its moniker. Like any assortment, the individual efforts will vary in how you react to them. From France, Germany, and Spain--these films have little in common from a thematic sense, but all are specifically intended for mature audiences. If you're just looking for a bit of sexiness, this collection might not be for you. Three of the entries are dark, experimental, and geared toward viewers not expecting conventional narratives. Love them or hate them, I have no doubt that three of the four films will leave you with incredibly strong opinions.

Secret Things--5 Stars: As 2002's "Secret Things" begins, the French film virtually slaps you in the face with its sexuality. The tale of liberation and exploration by the two leading ladies starts out as a bit of experimental fun and gets progressively darker and more intriguing. Claiming their sexual power, the ladies leverage it in a mercenary way to advance...

The Best of Global Lens: Brazil



Brazil Four Ways--Very Different Films Showcase Great Cultural Diversity
I've really been enjoying these Global Lens Collections that come out several times a year and spotlight a particular country's films. It is a cheaper way to pick up some movies you might not ordinarily watch or get a chance to see. Of course, with any compilation--there are going to be films that you might love and those that you might not. It's a gamble, but the adventure seeker in me enjoys the mystery. I have certainly viewed my fair share of Brazilian films in the past. The ones I've tended to gravitate toward have been gritty, realistic, and very alive. Some of those same qualities can be seen in the four films included in this set, although it is an amazingly diverse selection--there is a serio-comic slice of life drama, a multigenerational crime story, a period piece, and even a silent film. Every film has its merits and this is a pleasantly strong set.
