Brief Overview of the Russian-Afghanistan War
Russian-Afghanistan War: 1979-89 is a brief documentary that provides an overview of the war in which the Soviets invaded Afghanistan to stop the spread of Islamic fundamentalism. The Soviets were ill prepared to fight a hit and run guerrilla war. Afghanistan is a mountainous country with rough terrain that is difficult to travel. Additionally, the Soviets brought heavy weapons which were not easily transported and not very mobile. On the other hand the Mujahedeen used weapons that were old yet very mobile and light which made them great for fighting a guerrilla war. Thousands of Afghanis volunteered to fight against the Soviet invaders. Rebel leader Ahmad Shah Massoud taught the Mujahedeen how to improve their fighting effectiveness by going from unorganized hit and run attacks to more effective and well organized attacks and ambushes. This is a good summary of the Soviet Afghan conflict. It's good for those who know nothing about the conflict. It's not an in depth documentary.
