Rigoletto

A WONDERFUL & CREATIVE NEW TAKE ON A CLASSIC !!!
This is an easy review: this is a great performance by all!
1) A new modern production and staging that truly works. Think Chicago and Al Capone ( mafioso) for the setting. Act One a Casino or club. Act Two a tenement house etc.
2) Add an excellent vocal and Acting cast.
3) Emma Matthews is a great Gilda with a lovely sound and a expert technique and she can act!
3) Alan Opie gives a magnificent portrail both vocally and histrionically. He is no Leonard Warren, Robert Merrill or Tito Gobbi; but again, who is today. He is wonderful.
4) Paul O,Neil is a fine Duke. He won't erase memories of Pavarotti, Kraus or Bjoerling but they are no longer with us except in recordings and DVDs. O'Neil can go a little bit around the pitch in the Passagio but it's a live performance and it happens infrequently. His general sound is lovely, lyrical and masculine.
5) Excellent and detailed directing by Elijah Moshinsky.
6) Experienced conducting by Giovanni...
